Looking down on the so called "99 switchbacks" on Mt. Whitney Trail, at this location we have come up
only about 50% of the switchbacks. The Consultation Lake (right) and the swampy looking small
lake (left) near the trail camp (I do not know its name) are visible in the photo.
These switchbaks are very hard (especially under a hot sun) repetitive,
and can be dangerous. The slope of the trail itself is not that steep but switchbacks go on and on,
as the thin air starts affecting your performance. At some point you don't want to look on the side of the
cliff but just want the agony of the switchbacks to end. Coming down on them, when you are tired,
is also hard, and it plays havoc with your knees.
