| Domitian's Stadio or Hippodrome (Stadium) |
| |
|
This was one of Domitian's project. It looks like a gigantic trough (some
145m long) surrounded by a two-story portico. Some say it was designed to
stage private games and spectacles for the emperor; others say it was a garden
or an atheletes' ground. The small oval track at the southern end dates from
6C and is the work of Theodoric, the Ostrogoth, who occupied the
Palatine at that period. The huge recess in the center of the long east side
may have been reserved for the emperor. |
