| Marzocco lions by Donatello, Loggia della Signoria, Florence |
| |
|
The Marzocco, or Lion, was Florence's traditional heraldic symbol. Captured prisoners
were traditionally obliged to kiss its posterior. The statue was originally carved for a
papal apartment in the church of Santa Maria Novella and moved to the piazza in 1812. |
